Hi LUG,

As many of you are aware, the Linux User Group has two 1U servers in its
possession. One, char,
has been used for infrastructure purposes -- specifically, handling
authentication to both servers, our
website, the wiki, and other miscellanea.

The other, short, is used as a shared computing resource provided for LUG
members. Short has run
into some problems, and has been stuck on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (6)
while char runs on EL7.
Among other things, it is currently impossible to login to short remotely.
Due to the combination of outdated
software, authentication problems, and years of accumulated configuration
with purpose unknown, an executive
decision has been made to backup the server and reimage it.

Therefore, short will have (un)scheduled downtime beginning, most likely,
TODAY. I plan on cloning the disk
today. If I get to reimaging it, then short will be down for the duration
of that as well.

I haven't any idea how long it's going to take to bring it back online. I
would say a week at most. Hopefully sooner.

All user data will be preserved and restored if possible, otherwise
available upon request. ZNC and other services will
be restored.

Apologies for the *short* notice.

Hello LUG members, friends and associates,

As you know, one of our two servers has been undergoing maintenance. I'm
happy to report that, despite
some glitches along the way, I have successfully cloned the disk and placed
it in safekeeping.

Now that this step has been completed, the next step will be to *wipe
short* and
*reinstall* the operating system.
Short has not had a full reinstall since at least 2010, runs Red Hat EL6
(Santiago), and is likely host to all sorts
of security dragons. I do not feel comfortable administrating a server with
that much built up history, and while I
am aware that a full reinstall is never painless, in my opinion it is
necessary. Short smells.

Inevitably this will result in a (hopefully brief) configuration hell while
we bring back our usual services (ZNC, the
ebsite, etc). So please prepare for this.

Now for the important part:
There are many user accounts on short that have not been used for many
years. Too many to make manual pruning
feasible or even preferable. With that in mind, *if you want to keep your
account, please email me by **Monday,*
*February 8th. **I would also **highly recommend making a copy of any files
you wish to keep.* While I did make a
disk backup and plan on restoring the home directory for each user that
wishes to retain there account, ultimately *you*
*are responsible* for getting the files you want to keep off the server and
into safekeeping while short is rebuilt.

To avoid random misconfigurations and potential security issues, I will be
manually recreating users who wish to keep their
account, from scratch. The contents of your home directory will be
restored; beyond that I cannot make any guarantees.
After server installation is done, everyone who contacted me requesting to
keep their account will be emailed a new,
temporary password, which you will need to change upon first login.

I apologize that the migration has not been seamless, and for the extended
downtime. I'm shooting for having everything
back in working order by the end of the month, and with any luck, it should
be much sooner.

*To reiterate:*
*If you wish to retain your user account on short, email me no later than
February 8th 2016. I will recreate your*
*account **and **restore the **contents of your home directory, after which
you will be issued a new, temporary password.*

*Please retrieve any files you don't want to lose before February 8th.*

Imaging and reinstallation will occur at an indeterminate date afterwards.
I will continue to provide updates as progress is made.

Thanks for flying with us!
